The Draft

Event Concept / Brand Activation / Hockey Culture Engagement

The Draft: Rink Edition was a concept for a winter experiential campaign that brought the excitement of draft day to the backyard rinks, beer leagues, and shinny games that make up the heart of Canadian hockey culture.

Unlike the televised NHL draft where players wait to hear their name called, this activation flipped the script—putting fans, friends, and everyday legends on the draft board. Molson Canadian created the framework for a full-scale fantasy draft experience, but live, local, and on ice.

The concept imagined outdoor pop-up rinks across Canada where participants would be drafted onto teams in dramatic fashion—complete with jerseys, draft podiums, play-by-play announcers, and cold Molson in the snowbank. Teams would compete in a day-long tourney with big energy and bigger bragging rights.

The winning team? Drafted into The Show—a national final rink showdown held at a high-profile venue with media coverage, special guest coaches, and surprise NHL alumni.

The branding blended classic draft visuals with cold Canadian heritage, centred around a custom mark featuring a stylized rink, hockey sticks, and Molson’s signature maple leaf. The look reinforced Molson Canadian’s deep connection to hockey, but through a playful, grassroots lens.

Though never executed, The Draft: Rink Edition was designed to position Molson Canadian not just as a sponsor of hockey—but as its most loyal fan, bringing the spirit of the game back to the communities where it truly lives.
